The Tomato Bowl is not just a place where the Jacksonville Fightin' Indians play their home games. It is also an important landmark of Jacksonville, showing off the rich history of the town through its red iron ore rock exterior.
The Tomato Bowl began in 1938 as a WPA project during the Great Depression. Workers finished the stadium in 1940, and the first football game was held September 27th, 1940. In that game, Jacksonville High School played against Dallas Technical High School.
Since 1940, the Tomato Bowl has hosted many events. Jacksonville Independent School District uses the Tomato Bowl not only for football games, but soccer games as well. The stadium is not limited to sporting events. During the Second weekend in June, Jacksonville hosts the annual Tomato Fest on the front lawn of the stadium. The Tomato Bowl also hosts concert events, such as the HarvestFest
The people of Jacksonville are proud of the city's rich history and heritage, and nothing shows that more than the Tomato Bowl. Why not come and see why we like it so much?
